Fees

I offer a free 15-minute consultation session to give you a chance to meet me, and to give us a chance to discuss whether I might have the right therapeutic fit for you.

Sessions last 50 minutes and are $160 per session.  Longer sessions are pro-rated.

Fees for other services (such as writing notes to third parties, transmitting files to other professionals, etc.) will be discussed as needed prior to me starting the service.

(Please note that I also work at a collective outside of my regular private practice, and their fees and policies will vary from these.)

Confidentiality

If you've been to counselling before, you've probably heard all of the following.  It is nevertheless vital that clients understand what "confidential" means in the context of counselling.

I am committed to maintaining privacy and confidentiality, but that confidentiality is not absolute.  It has limits which are based in my professional ethics and the laws of the Province of Ontario and Federal Canadian law.  So while I will do my utmost to maintain my clients' confidentiality, there are circumstances under which I am compelled to release client information.

By far the most common reason, in my career, has been when clients request that I speak with or release information to a doctor, lawyer, other counsellor, etc.  To do this we will go through a bunch of paperwork first.

Otherwise, I am compelled to release client information if:

  • I have reason to believe my client or someone around them is in immediate danger.
  • I have reason to believe a child (or someone who appears to me to be a child) under the age of sixteen is at risk of or is experiencing abuse or neglect.
  • I have reason to believe a social worker or social services worker has engaged in sexual misconduct with you.
  • I receive a subpoena, court order, or search warrant for client records, and/or to provide testimony.
Information about how I confidentially consult with other mental health professionals, and how I employ services to safeguard my clients' confidentiality can be found below.

Social workers are also allowed to release relevant information to the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers in the event of a complaint investigation. We are also allowed to release limited financial information to collection agencies in the event of non-payment (but in order to avoid this I wait to schedule another session when someone is behind by one or more sessions).

Cancelling, Rescheduling, and Lateness

I ask for 24 hours of notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session.  Sessions that are not cancelled or rescheduled with 48 or more hours of notice will be charged at my full rate.  I make every effort to start sessions on-time.  If I am late, the 50 minutes starts when I show up.  If a session needs to be rescheduled because of my lateness, there is no cancellation or rescheduling fee.  If a client is late without notice, I will wait twenty minutes.  After twenty minutes the cancellation fee is charged.

Payment

I accept payment through e-transfer, and will discuss when we meet.

Scope of Practice

If my professional opinion is that the issues a client wishes to explore with me fall outside of my scope of practice (that is, what I am licenced and trained to do), then I will refer to other supports.  I encourage clients to think of me as like a family doctor; I am trained in a broad variety of issues and interventions, however for specialized support, we need to look elsewhere - just as one would see a surgeon for surgery, not their family doctor.  Examples of issues and practices that fall outside of my scope are crisis and emergency support, working with eating disorders, providing assessments or diagnoses, and prescribing medication.

Please note I am licenced to practice in the Province of Ontario, meaning that my clients must, regardless of citizenship or residence, be in the Province of Ontario when we meet online.

Reimbursement

Many insurance plans cover Registered Social Workers  After payment, I supply clients receipts that can be submitted to to insurance companies.  I am not equipped to do direct-billing.  If you do not have insurance, you may wish to keep your receipts and explore whether they can be claimed as Medical Expenses at tax time (the rules regarding income tax deductions change frequently, so please consult a tax or accounting professional).

Consultation and Learning

I am committed to continuous learning, and providing the best service possible.  To that end I regularly consult with other mental health practitioners, and I typically review every case at least once to ensure excellent service.  This is a standard practice, and I use only the minimum amount of information needed to discuss a case.  I am happy to discuss with clients the names of practitioners I consult with, and I only consult with mental health practitioners who are bound by the same oaths (or equivalent ethics, if they are not social workers) and legislation regarding privacy and confidentiality as I am.

Maintenance of Files

I hold on to files for at least seven years following my last contact with a client.  Though I am not currently working with minors, if I do so I maintain their file for seven years following their eighteenth birthday.  Clients can have reasonable access to their files up until that point.

Electronic Communication

I work primarily on-line, and do my best to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of my clients' sessions and information.  I use services that are compliant with relevant legislation, and communication technology that is end-to-end encrypted.  I store client records using a service whose servers are located inside Canada.  I work in a private space.  Regardless, it is impossible to completely guarantee privacy and confidentiality as unforeseeable circumstances occur, including system outages, hardware failure, poor reception and connection, hacking, etc.  I will continue to do my best to ensure undisrupted service and the confidentiality of my clients' information, and employ services designed to that end.

I encourage clients to consider the information they write in emails to me as, even though I use an encrypted email service, we do not have control over how  emails are routed and stored as they travel online.  I tend to use minimal information in emails, and though I do email about fees, I never include or request financial information such as credit card numbers or banking information over email.

I encourage my clients to use headsets when meeting with me, to password-protect their phones and other devices, to avoid using public or un-secured WiFi, to avoid using work email or WiFi to contact me, and to double-check my email address before sending me a message.
