My Approach
Sometimes people come to me with a list of goals; sometimes people's hopes for therapy are not that clear; often, it's somewhere in between. All of the above are fine. I believe counselling is a place of guided self-study where we build mindful awareness of ourselves, build capacity to stay with hard feelings and memories, and use our ability to stay present with discomfort to make decisions that can transform our lives for the better.
I value client feedback. It's made me a better therapist and a better person. My clients tell me sessions with me are surprisingly funny, that I'm patient and non-judgemental, and that I'm very good at helping people stay with and understand difficult thoughts, emotions, and decisions. It makes me happy to hear that, because I work hard to make sure that's people's experience of counselling with me.
I graduated with my Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) in 2008 and I've provided counselling services ever since. I'm trained in many evidence-informed modes of therapy, including Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Ecotherapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for trauma, Behaviour Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and many clinical applications of neuropsychology.
I'm a queer, cis, white, able-bodied settler. I work from a trauma-informed, evidence-informed (including client feedback, research, and practice wisdom), and non-judgemental place. I believe in celebrating 2SLGBTQIA+ lives, and know first-hand how wonderful, difficult, and complicated it can be to be part of those communities. I know that anti-misogynist, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and de-colonized work is a journey; it's one that I believe in, and a path that I'm committed to.
I'm also an avid photographer, writer, and person who gets outside. I love languages, and I love learning about and from the green and blue world.
